New Caledonia: where to play golf

In previous posts we’ve discussed all the amazing things you can do in New Caledonia (school trips for kids, my favourite things to do in Noumea, exploring the North and lunching with a local kanak family, the best of stunning Isle of Pines, water activities – and so on I have blogged) but we haven’t yet talked golf.

So this post is for all you guys and girls for whom a long walk after a little white ball is your kind of holiday.

These views make that shank almost bearable!

You’ll be pleased to know that as we speak a new 18-hole Dye Design course is being built right beside the new 5-star Sheraton Resort in Bourail (about 2 hours north of Noumea), surrounded by lush forest and a UNESCO-listed lagoon. This will be a destination in its own right and ideal for golf trips, honeymooners and those who want to hide away in paradise.

But in the meantime, here is where you can swing a club either with friends or leave them for the day and have some quiet time on the green 🙂

Tina Golf Club

On the PGA circuit, Tina is ranked in the Top 100 golf courses in the world. It’s just out of Noumea near the architecturally spectacular Tjibaou Cultural Centre. Lush fairways stretch along the coast, around mangrove plantations and overlook the lagoon. Because of the trade winds, this course can be different every day with a hilly front nine into the hills, followed by a back nine around the lagoon with its stunning views.

Ouenghi Golf Course

About an hour’s drive from Noumea, or 15 minutes from the airport, this is a golf course with its own hotel accommodation with restaurant and swimming pool (if you wish to stay). Perfect for the full immersion golfing week or groups from golf clubs who want to stay in the simple, airconditioned bungalows and roll up to tee first thing in the morning.

Dumbea Golf Course

This 18-hole course is only 20 minutes from Noumea. It’s a community course with a club house and restaurant and perfect for those hankering for a hit without taking the whole day to do it, yet set among the beautiful New Caledonian scenery.
