How handy is this? If your New Year’s resolutions include no drinking on school nights, just sneak into Giapo on Auckland’s Queen St and order a couple of scoops of NZ sauvignon blanc sorbet in a cup!
I stopped by last week to give the new wine ice cream the once-over, sniff the bouquet, swill it around, you know the drill… It’s subtle. If I didn’t know it was wine I’d have guessed pears, or maybe apricot. I reckon it’s a little too sweet and sorbet-ish to really pass as a frozen glass of plonk but owner Gianpaolo Grazioli (yes a fair dinkum Italian – the home of gelato) did assure me there was about 2% alcohol in it.
However, there are 56 flavours here at any one time, all hand made in the back room from organic and local produce with no preservatives and new tastes are added every day. So far 500-600 have been invented right here in store. Only half an hour before I got there, NZ Top Model judge Colin Mathura-Jeffree was there for the launch of his own personal gelato: the Colin Mathura-Jeffree. He wanted something exotic, said Gianpaolo, so they whipped him up a banana, macadamia nut and nutella gelato. I liked it. And so did other happy lickers who were ordering it by the cone load.
I wonder what the taste of Blog would be…? Might have to ask Gianpaolo if a wee personal combo of my favourite things could sit next to The Colin. I reckon a passionfruit and apple sour sorbet would be me. Anyone fancy a scoop?
