Lest we forget: New York opens its 9/11 memorial

It’s 10 years today since we all watched in horror as the World Trade Center twin towers came crashing down. We all remember exactly where we were when we heard – and saw – the news. Like JFK in the generation before and Princess Diana after that, it was a moment we will never forget.

Ten years later and downtown New York is still being rebuilt. I’ve been a few times in the last few years and scaffolding still wraps many of the surrounding buildings. But today a poignant and beautiful monument was unveiled and finally the covered wire fences have been taken down to reveal what they’ve been working on…

The footprint of the foundations of the twin towers is now an open public space with waterfalls cascading over the names of the 3000 brave souls who died on this site. Have a look at this time lapse video over 10 years of the memorial being constructed – and note the change in season. I can’t wait to visit.
