A call to All Blacks rugby fans!

Those of us who grew up in New Zealand will know the song Tu tira Mai Nga Iwi. It was the anthem of our childhood with the boys hollering “aue” at the end of the first line.

Hardly anyone knew what it meant, and quite possibly still don’t! But if you were to start it in a pub in any part of the world where Kiwis are gathered, a rumpty sing along would ensue. (Go on, try it!)

It makes sense then that this song of our youth becomes the anthem we New Zealanders are being encouraged to sing as our rugby All Blacks face the visiting British and Irish Lions for the first time in 12 years – the aim being to drown out any Welsh singing. Hopefully it’ll catch on. Maybe if enough of us join in it’ll become our Aussie, Aussie Aussie!

Tutira mai nga iwi chant

The new chant for All Blacks fans is aims to drown out the opposition!

Here are the Maori words for you to start practicing, and below that is the English translation – and the video:

Tūtira mai ngā iwi, (aue!)
tātou tātou e
Tūtira mai ngā iwi, (aue!)
tātou tātou e
Whaia te marama-tanga,
me te aroha – e ngā iwi!
Kia tapatahi,
Kia ko-tahi rā
Tātou tātou e

Tā-tou tā-tou
(tahi, rua, toru, wha)
Hi aue hei !!!

And once more in English:

Stand together people
All of us, all of us
Stand in rows people
All of us, all of us
Seek after knowledge
and love of others – everyone
Think as one
Act as one
All of us, all of us

All of us, All of us!!
(one, two, three, four)
Hi aue hei !!!

And here is the rendition running us all through exactly how to pronounce it from the www.tutiramai.kiwi website. Aue!
