I have worked with some of my lovely travel industry friends who are used to putting itineraries together for high-end luxury tourists visiting New Zealand. Anna from General Travel has put this fabulous Northland/Bay of Islands Tour together covering all the highlights of this region, plus some decadent extras along the way.

You can also opt in to do lots of other activities like heli tours, dolphin watching or golf at Kauri Cliffs if that tickles your fancy!

Here is my 6-night/7-day Far North itinerary

Day 1

10am Depart Auckland for Russell via the Sculptureum in Matakana for lunch and a tour of the gardens and exhibitions.

Continue on to Whangarei Falls for a short walk for those who wish (30-45 mins) then on to Russell. The coach will take the car ferry and we will join the quick passenger ferry from Pahia to our accommodation for the next 4 nights.

Welcome dinner together, included.

Accommodation: Duke of Marlborough Hotel superior room for the next 4 nights. (Room upgrades available).

Day 2

Explore Paihia and Waitangi

Take the ferry from Russell to Paihia to meet our local guide will be with us for the morning as we visit Waitangi. Free time to look around Paihia.

This afternoon we’ll take a walk with a local guide around historic Russell and learn a bit more about “the hellhole of the Pacific” (yes it was really called that!)

Lunch/Dinner: own arrangements. There are plenty of places to try so we will make a plan on the day and, as always, guests are welcome to join me or make their own plans.

Day 3

Our Cape Reinga and Ninety Mile Beach day!

This is a full day trip to the farthest tip of New Zealand with a local guide telling the stories and providing fascinating insights into the history of this part of the country. We’ll drive on the sand and have time to boogie board on sand dunes on Ninety Mile Beach (or just take photos!)

Lunch or dinner will be fish and chips in the bus from the legendary Mangonui Fish n Chip shop (if they are open post Covid) and a free evening back in Russell. If you are travelling solo, you are always welcome to join me!

Day 4

Free day in Russell/Paihia

This is a free day to take advantage of the things you want to do: shopping, exploring, a boat trip, hiking, maybe even a spa.

Day 5

Russell and Hokianga

Begin with breakfast at the hotel (included) and depart for Hokianga in our private coach via time in Kerikeri. We’ll stop for chocolate (why not!) and perhaps orchards or to see local artisans.

Lunch at Marsden Estate Winery with wine tasting (included).

Dinner and lunches own arrangements today and I will make suggestions for cafes and pubs, or you might to have an easy night at the hotel restaurant.

After dinner we will take an evening tour to Waipoua Forest with a local Maori guide from Footprints to see mighty Tane Mahuta lit up at night.

Accommodation: Copthorne Hotel, Hokianga for 2 nights.

Day 6

Explore the Hokianga region

Today we will have a leisurely day with our driver and coach. We’ll go to Opononi and learn the stories Opo the friendly dolphin! We’ll take the ferry to historic Rawene and have lunch and a browse around.

Day 7

Depart for Auckland via Waipoua Forest to see some of the other incredible kauri, then stop at the Kauri Museum for lunch.

Arrive back in Auckland about 5pm.

Ts & Cs

A $500 deposit per person will confirm your spot. Full payment is due by 1 October 2020. Group size is 14 max, 10 minimum.

Covid information: If for any reason this tour is cancelled or individuals from this tour must cancel due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, there will be no cancellation fees for the tour or individual persons and all your monies will be refunded. This includes, for example, if a guest is joining from Christchurch and Christchurch is placed into Level 3 or 4 lockdown, restricting travel. 

However we do strongly recommend you take out insurance to cover other unforeseen circumstances that might prevent you from travelling, or should you need to leave the tour early for any reason.

If you need to cancel for personal reasons prior to 14 days before departure, there will be no cancellation fee. Cancellation within 7-14 days of the tour will incur a $500 cancellation fee. Transport is provided by Hallmark in a Mercedes luxury coach.

All breakfasts are included and lunches and dinners as per the itinerary (6x breakfast, 3x lunch, 2x dinner). Alcoholic beverages will be at your own expense at included meals.

This tour begins and ends in Auckland, you’ll need to make your own way to the pick up point, to be confirmed. Auckland Airport pick ups can be arranged.
