NYC: The BEST July 4th fireworks events in New York City (2026)

This year marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independance, and that means the biggest fireworks displays you’ve ever seen across the whole country and especially here in New York City!

This year fireworks will be bursting from barges on both the Hudson AND East rivers, and that means so many more places to stand for free views. Macy’s announced they will have barges in the lower East River in the Seaport District and the lower Hudson River, in collaboration with Jersey City.

So to get properly amongst the pyrotechnics, one of these river cruises below is the absolute best way. Oh, and you get food and drinks too!

If you hate crowds but don’t want to miss out, I’ve put together this post of hotels with rooftops or rooms with a view at one of these fab New York hotels.

Haven't got time to finish this post now?

Save it for later and I'll email it to you!

But before you get to the evening, start your Independence Day off with brunch at one of these great brunch spots in NYC and fortify yourself for the day – and night – ahead!

Empire State Building

As one of the most famous (and romantic) landmarks in New York City, the Empire State Building is our ultimate favorite spot, with more than 3 million hashtags on Instagram.

On Independence Day, the Empire State hosts their annual celebration from 7pm – 10pm. This exclusive event (closed to the general public and available by ticket only) offers prime views of the firework displays from the 86th floor, as well as gourmet food, DJ music and a premium open bar.

Guests have private access to the open-air observation deck for the best fireworks viewing in the city and an awesome 4th of July soundtrack.

If you’re lucky enough to get your hands on one of the event tickets on July 4th from SUMMITOne Vanderbilt, this party includes two premium drinks and a food package and you can roam all three floors to your heart’s content, taking as many selfies as you can fit on your phone.

It really is a must-visit any time in NYC. It’s bonkers and breathtaking and perfect for selfies.

Buy tickets to SUMMITOne for a tour any time for outstanding views – and make sure you save some money for a rooftop drink, like I have below. They’re not cheap!

This year we are spoiled for choice as both rivers will have fireworks.

Viewing spots on the East River — Brooklyn Bridge & Seaport

This side will be the most dramatic with fireworks launching from barges along the lower East River near the Seaport District and around the Brooklyn Bridge.

Manhattan side (Lower Manhattan / Financial District):

  • South Street Seaport (Pier 16 & Pier 17) — conveniently located right where the firework barges are generally positioned, with historic ships and the Brooklyn Bridge as a backdrop. Elevated viewing spots via Broad Street, Pearl Street, and Frankfort Street. In past East River years, the city has given away free tickets for designated sections at Pier 16 and Pier 17 — worth watching for that when registration opens.
  • FDR Drive elevated sections — public viewing from elevated parts of FDR Drive in Lower Manhattan. In the past NYPD has managed access points at Robert F. Wagner Sr. Place and the Brooklyn Bridge on/off ramps, and at Broad Street & Water Street.
  • ADA viewing historically been at the Murry Bergtraum Softball Field, accessible from Pike Slip & Cherry Street.

Brooklyn side:

  • Brooklyn Bridge Park (Piers 1–6) — the only designated public viewing area in Brooklyn in recent years, with free lottery tickets typically available from July 1st. Enter via Old Fulton & Furman Street, Joralemon Street, or Atlantic Avenue. Arrive very early, this fills up fast.
  • Brooklyn Heights Promenade — a classic with sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline and the river. Entered via Columbia Heights & Pineapple Street, or Montague/Pierrepont Streets. Gets extremely crowded.
  • DUMBO — street-level views near the waterfront with a great angle on the Brooklyn Bridge spectacle.

Viewing spots on the Hudson River — Lower Manhattan & New Jersey

This is the exciting new addition for 2026, opening the show to all of those who previously had to travel to the East Side.

New Jersey — the best-kept secret this year:

Liberty State Park in Jersey City is one of the finest free outdoor viewing spots in the entire metro area — wide open lawns, unobstructed sightlines, and dramatic views of the Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty, and Ellis Island all in one frame.

Exchange Place Waterfront in Jersey City hosts the city’s annual July 4th Festival, a full-day celebration with food trucks, DJ stages, beer gardens, and a Kids’ Zone. The evening fireworks display is set to a synchronised patriotic soundtrack — and this year it’s tied into the Macy’s show, making it one of the most amazing free events of the night.

Along the Hoboken waterfront, the parks that lined up perfectly when the Hudson River hosted the display in 2024 will again be favorites: Maxwell Park, Elysian Park, Sinatra Park, the Little League field, and Pier A Park are all right on the water and draw huge crowds for this reason. Coolers and chairs are generally permitted in these public spaces.
